Meet Dr. Paula Coates

PAULA L. COATES, DDS, MS, FAAPD

Dr. Paula L. Coates is a Board Certified Dentist and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

She earned her dental degree in 2000 from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, TN. Dr. Coates received multiple awards and recognitions including the National Dean’s List as well as induction into the Omicron Omicron Chapter of The Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.

Following dental school, Dr. Coates continued to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to complete her specialty training in pediatric dentistry.  During her time there, she gained a great deal of experience working with children of all ages, especially those with special health care needs.  She also received training in trauma management, interceptive orthodontics, sedation dentistry and dentistry under general anesthesia. During her residency, Dr. Coates also earned her Masters of Science degree. Prior to relocating to the DMV, she was an Assistant Professor at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

She is currently serving as an At-Large Trustee of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Virginia Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, National Dental Association, Duke Alumni Association, Duke Black Alumni and Meharry National Alumni Association. In addition, Dr. Coates is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and The Arlington (VA) Chapter of The Links, Inc.

Her passions include spending time with her family, mentoring youth and future dentists, reading, dancing, watching/participating in sports activities, the performing arts, arts and crafts, shopping and traveling.
