Healthy habits at home + regular visits + gentle guidance = strong, confident smiles.
Preventive Dental Care for Healthy, Growing Smiles
Preventive care is the foundation of a healthy smile. At Alexandria Children's Dentistry, we focus on early detection, education, and gentle guidance to help protect your child's teeth as they grow.
Our goal is simple: keep small problems from becoming big ones.
Routine Exams & Cleanings
Regular dental visits allow us to monitor growth and development, check for cavities and gum health, provide professional cleanings, and guide age-appropriate home care. We typically recommend visits every six months.
Home Care Guidance
We partner with parents to support healthy habits at home. During visits, we offer simple, realistic tips for brushing and flossing, nutrition and snacking habits, oral habits, and age-appropriate fluoride use. No judgment — just guidance.
Sealants & Fluoride
When appropriate, we may recommend dental sealants to protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth, and fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel and reduce cavity risk. These preventive services are quick, gentle, and effective.
Growth & Development Monitoring
In addition to checking teeth, we keep an eye on dental development, jaw growth, bite alignment, oral habits, and breathing patterns and oral posture. This allows us to identify potential concerns early and guide families appropriately.
Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend visits every six months for most children. These appointments allow us to track growth and development, check for cavities and gum health, perform a professional cleaning, and offer age-appropriate home care guidance. Some children with a higher risk for cavities or other concerns may benefit from more frequent visits, which we will discuss with you based on your child's individual needs.
During a routine visit, we examine your child's teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development. We also perform a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup, apply fluoride if appropriate, and talk with you about any questions or concerns. The visit is also an opportunity for us to check on oral habits, breathing patterns, and overall dental development so we can identify anything worth monitoring early.
Fluoride treatments can begin as soon as your child has teeth. We assess each child individually and recommend fluoride based on their age, cavity risk, and diet. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to decay. It is one of the simplest and most effective preventive tools available, and the in-office application is quick and painless.
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where cavities are most likely to develop due to the natural grooves and pits in the enamel. They are most commonly recommended when the permanent molars come in, typically between ages six and twelve. Sealants are quick to apply, comfortable, and can significantly reduce cavity risk in those areas.
Brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing once daily, limiting sugary and starchy snacks, and drinking water throughout the day are the core habits we recommend. The right techniques and tools vary by age, and we offer specific, realistic guidance at every visit so that home care feels manageable rather than overwhelming. We are always happy to walk through brushing and flossing technique with both parents and children during appointments.
Flossing should begin as soon as two teeth are touching side by side, which can happen as early as age two or three. At that stage, parents should handle flossing for their child. Most children do not have the dexterity to floss effectively on their own until around age eight to ten. We will show you the best technique for your child's current stage at any visit.
