Monitoring growth and guiding your child’s smile from the very beginning.
Orthodontic Growth & Development
At Alexandria Children's Dentistry, we monitor your child's dental growth and bite development as part of routine care. Early observation allows us to identify potential concerns and guide families at the right time.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation around age seven. This does not mean treatment will be needed — it simply allows us to assess how the teeth and jaws are developing.
Why Early Monitoring Matters
When we observe growth early, we can:
Track jaw development
Watch how permanent teeth are erupting
Identify spacing or bite concerns
Guide timing for orthodontic care if needed
Interceptive & Supportive Care
Our doctors may recommend simple interceptive measures when appropriate, such as space maintainers or habit guidance. For more comprehensive orthodontic needs, we work closely with trusted local orthodontic specialists and will guide you through referrals when the time is right.
A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach
Every child develops differently. Our goal is not to rush treatment, but to support healthy growth and recommend care only when it is truly beneficial.
Frequently Asked Questions
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have an initial orthodontic evaluation around age seven. At this age, enough permanent teeth have come in to give us a meaningful picture of how the teeth and jaws are developing. An evaluation at this stage does not mean treatment is needed right away. In many cases, we simply monitor growth over time and act only when the timing is right for your child.
By age seven, we can assess how the permanent teeth are erupting, whether there is adequate space for incoming teeth, how the upper and lower jaws relate to each other, and whether any bite concerns are developing. Early evaluation gives us a baseline so we can track changes over time and make well-timed recommendations rather than reactive ones.
Not necessarily. Identifying a concern early does not automatically mean braces or comprehensive orthodontic treatment is needed right away. In many cases, the best approach is continued monitoring. When early intervention is appropriate, it is often something simple, such as a space maintainer or habit guidance, that supports healthy development and may reduce the complexity of future treatment.
Interceptive orthodontics refers to early, limited measures taken to guide jaw and tooth development before comprehensive orthodontic treatment begins. At Alexandria Children's Dentistry, this may include space maintainers to hold room for incoming permanent teeth or guidance around oral habits affecting bite development. The goal is to work with your child's natural growth rather than correct problems after they are fully established.
A space maintainer is a small dental appliance used to hold the gap left by a baby tooth that was lost earlier than expected. When a baby tooth is lost too soon, neighboring teeth can drift into the open space and block the path of the incoming permanent tooth. A space maintainer preserves that space so the permanent tooth has room to erupt properly. We will let you know if one is recommended based on your child's development.
That is completely normal, and we will simply continue to monitor. Not every child requires early intervention, and we never recommend treatment unless it is genuinely beneficial. If your child is developing well, we will let you know and keep tracking growth at routine visits so we can act at exactly the right time if anything changes.
